Lyrics
What do I have but Jesus
I’ve found no one like Him
All the world has loses its appeal
When He stands beside me
The world can keep its praises
All its riches and its treasures
‘Cause there’s nothing like His presence to me
And men may give their favor
All their fleeting awe and honor
But there’s nothing like His presence to me
What do I have but Jesus
Nothing I’ve gained compares
His friendship is all the strength I need
To never grow weary
The world can keep its praises
All its riches and its treasures
‘Cause there’s nothing like His presence to me
And men may give their favor
All their fleeting awe and honor
But there’s nothing like Your presence to me
I bought the field and I keep diggin’ up more treasure
It turns out it’s here in the ground, I could never measure
Is there even a cost if I end up holdin’ heaven
Oh the beauty of livin’ in Your presence
Mmm, oh, mmm, oh, oh, mmm, mmm

Meaning & Inspiration
The Field portrays the presence of Jesus as treasure worth more than praise, wealth, honor, or any other gain. Its opening confession narrows every source of security to Christ, whose friendship supplies strength when lesser attractions lose their appeal. The repeated contrast between lasting presence and fleeting human favor gives the song a clear language of devotion. Nothing in the lyric is treated as equal to fellowship with Jesus.
The image of buying a field and continuing to uncover treasure closely echoes Jesus’ parable in Matthew 13:44. In that passage, joy leads a person to sell everything for the field containing hidden treasure. The song develops that image through worship, describing life in God’s presence as a value beyond measurement. Psalm 73:25-26 also fits its central confession that God remains the believer’s portion when every other strength fails. Together, these themes present surrender as joyful recognition of Christ’s surpassing worth rather than reluctant loss.
