Meaning & Inspiration
Fall Afresh is a prayer for the Holy Spirit to wake and refill the believer. The opening lines ask the soul to awaken to hunger, seeking and thirst, and to return to a first love and do the works done at first, a thought that echoes Revelation 2:4-5.
The chorus asks the Spirit of the living God to fall afresh, to wake the singer from sleep, to blow through the caverns of the soul and to pour in until there is overflow. That request recalls Acts 2:17 and Ephesians 5:18 on being filled with the Spirit, and the language of thirst fits Psalm 42:1-2 and John 7:37-39. A later section widens the prayer from personal to shared, asking for the Spirit to fill the place so that God's glory invades it. The song is slow and repetitive, which gives space to pray the lines, and its tone is hungry and expectant rather than celebratory.
