Lyrics

Verse 1

I've had many tears and sorrows,
I've had questions for tomorrow,
there's been times I didn't know right from wrong.
But in every situation,
God gave me blessed consolation,
that my trials come to only make me strong.

Chorus

Through it all,
through it all,
I've learned to trust in Jesus,
I've learned to trust in God
Through it all,
through it all,
I've learned to depend upon His Word.

Verse 2

I've been to lots of places,
I've seen a lot of faces,
there's been times I felt so all alone.
But in my lonely hours,
yes, those precious lonely hours,
Jesus lets me know that I was His own!

Chorus (Repeat)

Through it all,
through it all,
I've learned to trust in Jesus,
I've learned to trust in God
Through it all,
through it all,
I've learned to depend upon His Word.

Verse 3

I thank God for the mountains,
and I thank Him for the valleys,
I thank Him for the storms He brought me through.
For if I'd never had a problem,
I wouldn't know that he could solve them,
I'd never know what faith in God could do.

Meaning & Inspiration

“Through It All” by Andraé Crouch is a testimony of trusting God through hardship. The first verse admits many tears, sorrows, and unanswered questions about tomorrow, yet says that in every situation God gave consolation that the trials come only to make the singer strong. The thought is close to Romans 5:3-4 and James 1:2-4.

The chorus repeats “through it all, I’ve learned to trust in Jesus, I’ve learned to trust in God,” and adds a reliance on His Word. The second verse turns to loneliness: the singer has been to many places and seen many faces, but in lonely hours Jesus lets the singer know that he belongs to Him.

The last verse gives thanks for mountains, valleys, and the storms God brought the singer through, and says that without a problem there would be no knowledge of how He solves it. The song’s message is that faith grows through trouble, and gratitude can include the hard places.
