Meaning & Inspiration
“After Your Heart” by Hannah McClure, Bethel Music and Paul McClure is a prayer of desire for God’s presence. The first verse brings the singer’s heart again, just as he is, with only faith like a mustard seed to give. The pre-chorus puts all hope in God’s promise and reaches for the hem of His garment.
The chorus says, “I’m desperate for You, Jesus,” and adds that the singer cannot live without His presence and is running to where He is. The second verse says that God is perfect in all His ways, that He alone will satisfy, and asks what else the singer could long for. The bridge calls for God to come down and fall down, and says the singer wants to see and touch Him.
The imagery is close to Matthew 17:20, Mark 5:27-28 and Psalm 63:1, on mustard-seed faith, the woman who touched Jesus’ garment, and thirst for God. The song is simple, intimate and sung as a plea for His nearness.
