Lyrics

Verse 1

For goodness and for mercy that has surely followed us
And every blessing we could never earn
For all the gifts we cherish that are pictures of Your love
What could we ever offer in return?

Chorus

Thank You, thank You, Father, thank You
You are always good
Thank You, thank You, Father, thank You
You are always faithful and we are thankful

Verse 2

For sorrows and for trials that You send to shape our hearts
And pain that keeps us clinging to Your grace
For faith within the fire or Your presence in the dark
What can we sing no matter what we face?

Chorus (Repeat)

Thank You, thank You, Father, thank You
You are always good
Thank You, thank You, Father, thank You
You are always faithful and we are thankful

Verse 3

For pardon and forgiveness through our Savior's sacrifice
And death that's swallowed up in victory
For love that's never failed us and Your everlasting life
What will we say for all eternity?

Chorus

Thank You, thank You, Father, thank You
You are always good
Thank You, thank You, Father, thank You
You are always faithful and we are thankful

Outro

(We are thankful)
In every season, in every trial
You are faithful
You are faithful
We are thankful

Meaning & Inspiration

“We Are Thankful” by Sovereign Grace Music is a congregational song of thanks that moves from comfortable gifts to hard ones. The first verse gives thanks for goodness and mercy that have followed the singers and for blessings they could never earn, then asks what could be offered in return. The wording is close to Psalm 23:6.

The second verse is unusual in thanking God for sorrows, trials, and pain that keep the singers clinging to grace, and for faith in the fire and God’s presence in the dark. The third verse turns to the cross, giving thanks for pardon through the Savior’s sacrifice, for death swallowed up in victory, a line from 1 Corinthians 15:54, and for everlasting life.

The chorus is a plain, repeated “Thank You, Father,” with the statement that God is always good and faithful. The outro repeats that He is faithful in every trial. The song is easy to sing together and asks the church to thank God in joy and in pain.
