Meaning & Inspiration
When I listen to this, the line about not being consumed because of His compassion hits me hard. It pulls directly from Lamentations, where the prophet reminds himself that it’s the Lord's mercies that keep us from being wiped out. It’s a comfort to hear that because, honestly, there are days I feel like I’m barely hanging on, and knowing there’s a foundation of mercy keeping me upright feels like the only thing that makes sense. It matches what I read in Scripture about His faithfulness not being based on my own performance.
Then there’s that part about not leaving anything unfinished. That’s a bold claim, right? It feels like it’s pointing toward the idea that He who began a good work will finish it, which I’ve always held onto when I feel like a mess or a project that’s gone off the rails. But I have to stop and ask myself, what does "finished" actually look like? Sometimes I think I’m talking about my comfort or my plans, but if I’m honest, Scripture usually talks about completion in terms of being conformed to His image, which might look a lot different than me getting my way.
There’s a tension there that I can’t quite shake. The song talks about Him making ways, and I really want to believe that's about my personal life circumstances working out perfectly. But looking at the lives of the disciples or even the prophets, "making a way" often meant walking straight into hard, narrow places. It’s hard to reconcile that with the simple, catchy repetition of the song. I’m left wondering if I’m just singing about God making my life easier, or if I’m actually trusting that He is moving through the stuff I don't understand yet. I like the comfort it offers, but it keeps me wondering if I'm missing the weight of what it means to actually be brought home.
