“Happy in Jesus” by Luther Barnes is a live praise recording that begins with a call to the congregation, asking whether anybody is happy in Jesus today, and then settles into a chorus of joy, “I’ve been happy in Jesus all day, since I woke up this morning.” The repeated lines and the “all day” bridge give the song a call-and-response feel.
The second verse speaks plainly about hardship. The singer says that being happy does not mean having no troubles or setbacks, but that troubles, pain, and setbacks will not be allowed to steal the joy. This is close to Nehemiah 8:10, which the lyric quotes in its own words: “the joy of the Lord is your strength.” The call to “put a praise on top of your troubles” recalls Psalm 34:1 and Habakkuk 3:17-18.
