Meaning & Inspiration
“Not Afraid” by Rondell Positive and Kevin Downswell is a reggae-flavored song of fearlessness rooted in Psalm 23. The chorus says “My Shepherd, He walks beside me all the way, I will not fear, God is there.” In Jamaican patois, the verses tell the listener not to run, since the one who watches over them never sleeps, which is close to Psalm 121:4.
The verses collect more biblical images. God is called solid as a Rock and closer than a brother, which recalls Proverbs 18:24, and every knee is said to bow to Jehovah, as in Philippians 2:10. Goodness and mercy are on either side, twelve legions protect the singer, and praise and prayer are weapons and shield, recalling Psalm 23:6, Matthew 26:53, and Ephesians 6:16-18.
