Lyrics

Chorus

I need You like flowers need the sunshine
And I need You like trees need the rain
I need You more now than ever
Lord, I need Your touch again

Verse 1

I've taken for granted so many times
The love You placed in this heart of mine
I've been ungrateful, not meanin' to
And it amazes me how Your love holds true
Even when I've turned my back on You

Chorus

I need You like flowers need the sunshine
And I need You like trees need the rain
I need You more now than ever
Lord, I need Your touch again

Verse 2

I made You a promise to do my best
And if I trust in You, You'll do the rest
I don't need convincing, I firmly believe
'Cause I've seen the proof at Calvary
And I know You're all I'll ever need

Chorus

I need You like flowers need the sunshine
And I need You like trees need the rain
I need You more now than ever
Lord, I need Your touch again

Bridge

You've given everything I could ever ask for
A home and a family, and so much more

Chorus

I need You like flowers need the sunshine
And I need You like trees need the rain
I need You more now than ever
Lord, I need Your touch again

Chorus

I need You like flowers need the sunshine
(I need You)
And I need You like trees need the rain
I need You more now than ever
(I need You)
Lord, I need Your touch again
(I need You)

Chorus

I need You like flowers need the sunshine
(I need You)
And I need You like trees need the rain
(I need You)
I need You more now than ever
Lord, I need Your touch again

Meaning & Inspiration

I Need You is a prayer of dependence that compares the singer's need for God to flowers needing sunshine and trees needing rain. The chorus adds that the need is greater now than ever and asks for His touch again.

The verses confess taking God's love for granted and being ungrateful without meaning to, then marvel that His love holds true even after turning away. A later verse claims a promise to do one's best and trust Him to do the rest, backed by the proof seen at Calvary, and the bridge gives thanks for a home, a family and more. The mix of confession, trust and gratitude fits Psalm 63:1, John 15:5 and Lamentations 3:22-23, and the mention of Calvary points to Romans 5:8. The images are simple and natural, and the repeated chorus makes the song easy to remember.
