Lyrics

Verse 1

The God who made a way in the sea
Is the God who made a way within me
Nothing in me was for You
While everything in You was for me
You found me wandering in the desert
And You called so tenderly

Verse 2

The Voice that calls me to the unknown
Is the Voice Your people follow and know
You lead me by the calmest waters
You bring me to the richest pastures
And in the hour of my weakness
You will restore my soul

Chorus

Jesus, Jesus
You're the good Shepherd of my soul
Lead us, lead us
By Your goodness You'll lead us home

Verse 3

My soul is overcome by Your grace
Your mercy and goodness all of my days
You set a table for my spirit
And when my cup is dry You fill it
While all my enemies are watching
My lips will sing Your praise

Chorus 2

Jesus, Jesus
You're the good Shepherd of my soul
Lead us, lead us
By Your goodness You'll lead us home
Jesus, Jesus
You're the good Shepherd of my soul
Lead us, lead us
By Your goodness You'll lead us home

Bridge

When death is following our heels I will not fear
When shadows tell me what to feel I know You're here Jesus

Chorus 3

Jesus, Jesus
You're the good Shepherd of my soul
Lead us, lead us
By Your goodness You'll lead us home
Jesus, Jesus
You're the good Shepherd of my soul
Lead us, lead us
By Your goodness You'll lead us home

Meaning & Inspiration

Good Shepherd is a song that sets Psalm 23 alongside the personal story of being found. The first verse says that the God who made a way in the sea made a way within the singer, found them wandering in the desert and called tenderly. The second follows the psalm: calm waters, rich pastures and a restored soul in the hour of weakness.

The chorus calls Jesus the good Shepherd of the soul who leads home by His goodness, and the third verse echoes the table prepared, the cup filled and praise in sight of enemies. The bridge says death following at the heels will not bring fear since He is near. These lines follow Psalm 23 closely, and the title draws on John 10:11, with Exodus 14:21-22 behind the sea. Simple and prayerful, it suits corporate worship.
