Chorus

Kwa kupigwa kwako tumepona
Msalabani yote yamekwisha
Kwa kupigwa kwako tumepona
Msalabani yote yamekwisha

Verse 1

Nikikumbuka mateso yake Yesu
Alivyoteseka pale msalabani.
Fimbo, misumari, taji ya miba
Mkuki ubavuni na kutemewa mate.

Pre-Chorus

Mateso yake Yesu ilikuwa ni huzuni
Mwana wa Mungu kafa bila hatia yeyote
Ili mimi na wewe tuhesabiwe haki
(rudia)

Verse 2

Wakamkamata Yesu kama mwizi
Na kumdharau Yesu mwana wa Mungu.
Wakamkamata kama mwizi
Wakumdharau Bwana mwana wa Mungu.
Wakadhani kuwa ndio mwisho
Kumbe ndio mwanzo wa wokovu wangu
Kumbe ndio mwanzo wa wokovu wetu.

Pre-Chorus

Mateso yake Yesu ilikuwa ni huzuni
Mwana wa Mungu kafa bila hatia yeyote
Ili mimi na wewe tuhesabiwe haki
(rudia)

Verse 3

Akasulubiwa Yesu Ju ya msalaba
Akasema Baba, Baba oh wasamehe
Kwani hawajui walitendalo oh ooh
Ndipo Bwana wangu akakata roho
Ndipo Bwana wangu akakata roho

Chorus

Kwa kupigwa kwako tumepona
Msalabani yote yamekwisha
Kwa kupigwa kwako tumepona
Msalabani yote yamekwisha

Pre-Chorus

Mateso yake Yesu ilikuwa ni huzuni
Mwana wa Mungu kafa bila hatia yeyote
Ili mimi na wewe tuhesabiwe haki

Meaning & Inspiration

Mateso is a Swahili song that reflects on the suffering of Jesus on the cross. The refrain says that by His stripes there is healing and that everything is finished on the cross. The verses remember His suffering: the rod, the nails, the crown of thorns, the spear in the side and the spitting, and say that the Son of God died without any guilt so that sinners could be counted righteous.

A later verse tells of His arrest like a thief and being despised, with people thinking it was the end though it was the beginning of salvation, and then of Jesus on the cross saying Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing, before giving up His spirit. The lines follow Isaiah 53:5, John 19:30, Luke 23:34, 2 Corinthians 5:21 and Matthew 26:55. The solemn, repeated refrain makes the song a reverent meditation on the cross.
