Meaning & Inspiration
Holy! Holy! Holy! (Holy Spirit Chant) moves like an unscripted outpouring, built less on verses and choruses than on repeated cries lifted straight from the throne-room scenes of Scripture. The song pictures worshippers casting down their crowns before the King of Glory, an image drawn from the twenty-four elders who lay their crowns before the One seated on the throne. Angels and living creatures join the cry, echoing the seraphim of Isaiah and the four living creatures of John's vision of heaven.
The central refrain, "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come," quotes Revelation 4:8 almost word for word, anchoring the chant in a fixed biblical declaration rather than in original lyrics. The cries of "Hosanna" recall the crowds who welcomed Jesus with the same shout, applying an earthly greeting for a king to the eternal King of Kings.
