Meaning & Inspiration
Great God is a short declaration song that repeats praise of God as great. The chorus invites listeners to let the world know that they serve a great God, with hands in the air. The verses give thanks for angels watching over the singer's life day and night and say there is no fear of arrows by day or terrors in the night, so everyone can say He is a great God.
The verse language comes from Psalm 91:5-6 and 91:11 on arrows by day, terrors by night and angels guarding, and the greatness of God echoes Psalm 48:1, Psalm 145:3 and Deuteronomy 10:17. A bridge and hook repeat "Great God" and "Ain't nobody like him," which echoes Psalm 86:8. The call-and-response parts make it a lively song for a congregation to answer back.
