Lyrics

The yearning deep within me
Reaches out to You
Your oil of joy for mourning
Soaks me, makes me new

And I will go to Your secret place
Bow my knee to Your glorious throne
Have Your way in my heart, O Lord
Have Your way

I need You, Holy Spirit
Fire to my soul
Consume my total being
Jesus, take control

Meaning & Inspiration

“Have Your Way” is a prayer of surrender shaped by longing for God’s presence and transforming work. The opening lines move from inward yearning to divine comfort, describing joy replacing mourning and renewal reaching the whole person. The image recalls Isaiah’s promise of the oil of gladness in place of grief, while the movement toward God’s secret place suggests private prayer and trust beneath His care. Bowing before the throne expresses reverence as well as dependence.

The final verse addresses the Holy Spirit and asks for holy fire to reach the soul. Its request for Jesus to take control gives the title its full meaning: “Have Your way” is not a demand for a particular outcome, but consent to God’s rule within the heart. The song therefore joins consolation with consecration. Joy, prayer, worship, and spiritual renewal all lead toward yielded obedience. Through brief and direct language, it presents surrender as an active response to God’s presence, with every part of life placed under Christ’s authority.
