About Michael Card
Michael Card was born on April 11, 1957, in Madison, Tennessee, and is based in Franklin, Tennessee, where he has served as a singer-songwriter, musician, author, and radio host. His music is characterized by folk-style melodies and lyrics drawn from intensive Bible study, reflecting his background in biblical studies. Card holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biblical studies from Western Kentucky University, and he began his professional music career in 1981 with the release of his debut album, First Light. He has consistently maintained that his music career is secondary to his calling as a Bible teacher.
Throughout his recording career, Card released several albums that became well known in the contemporary Christian music landscape, including The Final Word (1987), Sleep Sound in Jesus (1989), Coram Deo (1992), and Starkindler (1998). His catalog includes songs such as “El Shaddai,” “Immanuel,” and “Heal Our Land.” He also hosted a long-running radio program, In the Studio with Michael Card, which combined Bible study with musical performances.
Card’s work has received multiple GMA Dove Awards, including Songwriter of the Year (1983), Song of the Year for “El Shaddai” (1983), Praise and Worship Album of the Year for The Final Word (1987) and Coram Deo (1993), and Children’s Music Album of the Year for Come to the Cradle (1994). His album Sleep Sound in Jesus achieved RIAA Gold certification in 1994. In addition to his music, Card has authored or co-authored numerous books, including A Sacred Sorrow, which received the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association’s Gold Medallion Book Award in 2006.
