About Fernando Ortega
Fernando Ortega is a contemporary Christian singer-songwriter whose refined approach to hymnody and worship music has drawn attention across the church world. Born Juan Fernando Ortega on March 2, 1957, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of New Mexico. His musical style blends elements of country, classical, Celtic, Latin American, world, and modern folk music. Before launching his recording career, he served as a worship leader at an Anglican church in Albuquerque.
Since the early 1990s, Ortega has released over twenty albums. His work is particularly noted for interpretations of traditional hymns, including “Give Me Jesus” and “Be Thou My Vision.” Key albums in his catalog include This Bright Hour (1997), Home (2000), Hymns of Worship (2003), The Shadow of Your Wings: Hymns and Sacred Songs (2006), Come Down O Love Divine (2011), and The Crucifixion of Jesus (2017). The song “Children of the Living God” is also part of his recorded repertoire.
Ortega’s contributions have been recognized with multiple GMA Dove Awards. He won the Dove Award for Bluegrass Recorded Song of the Year in 1998 for “Children of the Living God.” The following year, Home received the Dove Award for Inspirational Album of the Year (2000). In 2002, he shared in the Dove Award for Special Event Album of the Year for the collaborative project City on a Hill.
