About Downhere

Downhere was a Canadian Christian rock band active from 1999 to 2012. The group was formed by Marc Martel and Jason Germain while they were roommates at Briercrest Bible College in Saskatchewan, Canada. Original members included Martel, Germain, Jeremy Thiessen, Tyson Manning, and Corey Doak. In 2001, the band moved to Nashville, Tennessee, after signing with Word Records, and bassist Glenn Lavender joined the lineup shortly afterward. The band’s music became known for its melodic rock sound, vocal harmonies, and lyrics centered on Christian faith and ministry.

The group released a self-titled album, Downhere, in 2001, followed by So Much for Substitutes in 2003. In 2006, they signed with Centricity Records and released Wide-Eyed and Mystified. That album won the Juno Award for Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album of the Year in 2007. Their next release, Ending Is Beginning (2008), earned the same Juno honor in 2009. The band also received a GMA Dove Award in 2003 for Modern Rock Recorded Song of the Year for “Breaking Me Down” and won nine GMA Canada Covenant Awards in 2009.

Downhere continued to record, issuing How Many Kings: Songs for Christmas (2009) and On the Altar of Love (2011), the latter of which debuted at No. 18 on the Billboard album chart. Their catalog includes songs such as “Here I Am” and “My Last Amen.” The band announced that they would stop touring together effective January 1, 2013, bringing their decade-plus run to an amicable close.
