About Dena Mwana

Dena Mwana is a Congolese gospel singer and composer whose music ministry reflects her Christian faith. She was born Denise Mwanakitata Muwayi on December 27, 1986, in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. At age thirteen, she began singing in the “Notre dame de Grâce” church choir and by eighteen had become its music director. In 2004 she founded her first band, the Acapella Thematic Musical Group.

In 2006, Dena Mwana relocated to Virginia in the United States to pursue a career in gospel music. She has served as a cantor for the Philadelphia Mission Choir in Kinshasa and sings in French, English, Lingala, and Swahili. She is signed to Motown Gospel Africa, a label under Universal Music Group. In 2022, she graduated from the Mount Olive Bible Institute and Seminary.

Her discography includes the albums Hosanna (2011), Monene (2016), and Souffle (2020), as well as the EP 2DADDY (2024). Among her singles are “Saint Esprit,” “Maintenant Seigneur” featuring Dan Luiten, and the remix “Si La Mer Se Déchaîne” featuring the Soweto Gospel Choir.

Dena Mwana has been recognized with multiple awards. She won the Central African Artiste of Excellence honor at the African Gospel Music & Media Awards in both 2013 and 2019, and in 2016 she received the Etando Award for Art & Culture.
