Lyrics

God sent His son, they called Him, Jesus

He came to love, heal and forgive

He lived and died to buy my pardon

An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow

Because He lives, all fear is gone

Because I know He holds the future

And life is worth the living, just because He lives

How sweet to hold a newborn baby

And feel the pride and joy He gives

But greater still the calm assurance

This child can face uncertain day, because He lives

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow

Because He lives, all fear is gone

Because I know He holds the future

And life is worth the living, just because He lives

And then one day, I'll cross the river

I'll fight life's final war with pain

And then, as death gives way to victory

I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know He reigns

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow

Because He lives, all fear is gone

Because I know He holds the future

And life is worth the living, just because He lives

Meaning & Inspiration

Because He Lives traces Christian hope from the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus to the ordinary fears of human life. The opening verse summarizes the gospel through Christ coming to love, heal, forgive, and secure pardon, with the empty grave serving as the foundation of confidence. The chorus then applies that resurrection hope to tomorrow: fear loses its final authority because the future rests with the living Christ.

Each later verse widens that confidence. The image of holding a newborn child brings hope into an uncertain future, while the final river and battle imagery faces death without pretending that pain is absent. This assurance closely reflects Jesus describing himself as the resurrection and the life, as well as the apostolic teaching that Christ has been raised from the dead. The hymn therefore joins doctrine and daily courage. Life is portrayed as worth living not because circumstances are predictable, but because Christ lives, reigns, and promises victory beyond death.
