Lyrics

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Lover of my soul
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Never let me go

You promised me
You will complete Your work in me
And I will see Your hand
In the land of the living
In the land of the living

When I am weak
Your strength runs deeper, deeper still
And I receive Your love
In the land of the living, in the land

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Lover of my soul
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Never let me go

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Lover of my soul
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
You never let me go

Let Your healing water flow
Let Your holy power fall
Let Your healing water flow
Let Your holy power fall
Let Your healing water flow
Let Your holy power fall

When You speak
One word from You
Changes everything

When You speak
One word from You
Mountains have to move

When You speak
One word from You
Chains have to loose

When You speak
One word from You
Changes everything

When You speak
One word from You
Mountains have to move

When You speak
One word from You
Chains have to loose

When You speak
One word from You
Changes everything

When You speak
One word from You
Mountains have to move
Mountains have to move
Mountains have to move
Mountains have to move

Mountains have to move
Mountains have to move
Mountains have to move
Mountains have to move

Chains have to loose
Chains have to loose
Chains have to loose
Chains have to loose

Chains have to loose
Chains have to loose
Chains have to loose
Chains have to loose
Chains have to loose
Chains have to loose

Meaning & Inspiration

Tasha Cobbs Leonard leans hard into the repetition of the name "Jesus" in this track from her Hymns record. It’s a rhythmic, almost hypnotic approach. But when you’re standing in a kitchen at 3:00 AM, staring at a stack of bills or waiting for a biopsy result that hasn’t come yet, the name alone doesn't always act like a magic key. Sometimes, it just feels like a name.

The lyrics claim, "I will see Your hand / In the land of the living." It’s a line ripped from Psalm 27:13, where David is basically holding on for dear life while enemies close in. David says, "I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living." But read the context. David wasn't singing this from a high-production studio with a backing choir. He was singing it while terrified.

When Tasha Cobbs Leonard sings about seeing His hand in the land of the living, I find myself squinting. What does that actually look like? Does it look like the layoff notice I got last month? Does it look like the silence in the house after the funeral? If "seeing His hand" is limited to the mountaintops or the "mountains moving," then what happens when the mountain doesn't move? When the cancer stays, or the depression doesn't lift, or the check doesn't show up?

There’s a danger in the "one word from You changes everything" refrain. If we sell that as a rule, we’re selling cheap grace. We’re telling people that if their life isn't changing, it’s because they didn't hear the right word or they didn't have enough faith. That’s a heavy burden to put on someone who’s already breaking.

Look at the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus said, "If it is possible, take this cup from me." That was his word. He asked for the mountain to move. And it didn't. The cup stayed. He had to drink it. If the theology of "mountains have to move" were absolute, then the Cross would be a failure. But it wasn't. Sometimes, the "work He is completing" isn't the removal of the mountain—it’s the endurance through the valley.

I want to believe these lyrics. I want to lean into the comfort of a God who doesn't let go. But I need more than the hype. I need the kind of faith that survives the days where the chains don't loose and the mountains stay exactly where they are. I’m not saying she’s wrong; I’m saying it’s incomplete. Maybe the real "land of the living" isn't about everything going our way. Maybe it’s just the grit to keep breathing when everything else says to stop.
