Jon Reddick’s 2023 single “Holding On (Praise God)” is built around a simple shift: the singer stops white-knuckling his own life and admits he’s been at the losing end of every fight. The lyric that stands out is the chorus payoff: “I’m holding on to God / ’Cause I know my God is holding on to me.” That’s the whole point—our grip matters less than His. Reddick doesn’t pretend surrender is easy. First he admits “trusting in myself got me nowhere,” then he lands on the paradox: letting go is the only way to truly hold on.
Scripture echoes this. Psalm 121 says, “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Not from my own effort. And in Isaiah 41:10, God says, “I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” The song’s tension—still fighting, but on your knees—is real.
