Meaning & Inspiration
Jambo is a Kinyarwanda worship song about the power of God's spoken word. The opening says the word of the Creator reaches the singer where he or she is, breaks bronze, shakes the mountains, and that when He speaks once everything that exists obeys. The singer then asks God to say something, since when He speaks, the singer's matters are put right.
The verses appear to recall Gospel scenes: fishermen who toiled all night and caught nothing are told to cast the net again, a man waiting by a pool is told to take up the bed and go home, and a beggar is told to go and tell the good news. The second verse speaks of staying too long at one mountain and being sent into a promised land. These images match Luke 5:4-6, John 5:8 and Deuteronomy 1:6-8, with Hebrews 4:12 on the living word. The repeated chorus makes the song a confident declaration of what God's word can do.
