Israel Houghton - Breathe Into Me Lyrics

Breathe Into Me is a short prayer for renewal. The first lines repeat that only God takes the singer's breath away and that He then breathes new life, and the refrain asks Him to breathe into the singer once again. The repetition gives the lyrics a meditative rhythm.

The image of God breathing life comes from Genesis 2:7, where He breathes into the man, and from Ezekiel 37:9-10 and John 20:22 where breath brings new life and the Spirit. Psalm 51:10-12 also fits the request for a renewed spirit. With only a few lines, the song leaves space for a worship leader and congregation to wait on God and respond in prayer, and its tone is quiet, dependent and expectant. The wonder-filled opening line gives way to a plain request, so the movement is from awe to petition, and it works well as a bridge in a service or an extended time of waiting in silence.
