Lyrics
In Your presence, armies fall
And in my weakness, You are strong
In darkness, You go before
I will not fear when You call me out
Lord, You command the angels to stand
Watch over me, watch over me
You are faithful, never failing
You are steadfast, unchanging
When I call, You will answer
Oh my God, in whom I trust
In Your shadow, I am brave
Unafraid in Your dwelling place
In the face of my enemies
I stand secure, You deliver me
Lord, You command the angels to stand
Watch over me, watch over me, yeah
You are faithful, never failing
You are steadfast, unchanging
When I call, You will answer
Oh my God, in whom I trust
I know that You will save me
When I call upon Your name
No harm will overtake me
Because You overcame
God, You are my refuge
I rest beneath Your wings
Safe in the shelter of my King
I know that You will save me
When I call upon Your name
No harm will overtake me
Because You overcame
God, You are my refuge
I rest beneath Your wings
I'm safe in the shelter of my King
'Cause You are faithful, never failing
You are steadfast, unchanging
When I call, You will answer
Oh my God, in whom I trust
When I call, You will answer
Oh my God, in whom I trust

Meaning & Inspiration
Watch Over Me is a prayer of confidence in God’s protection when weakness, darkness, and opposition are near. The lyrics do not deny danger; instead, they place every threat beneath God’s authority. Images of armies falling, angels standing guard, and shelter beneath divine wings develop a clear confession that God remains faithful, steadfast, and responsive to prayer.
Much of the song closely echoes Psalm 91. The psalm’s dwelling place, shadow, refuge, wings, angelic protection, and promise that harm will not overtake the faithful all appear in the lyric’s language. Psalm 46:1 also supports the description of God as a refuge and present help amid trouble. The bridge joins these images to Christ’s victory, moving the song from a request for protection to settled trust. Repetition of “watch over me” functions as both petition and assurance, while the closing confession rests security not in personal courage but in the character of the King who shelters and answers.
