Lyrics

1 COME let us join with one accord
In hymns around the throne;
This is the day our rising Lord
Hath made and called his own.

2 This is the day which God hath blessed,
The brightest of the seven;
Type of that everlasting rest
The saints enjoy in heaven.

3 Then let us in his name sing on,
And hasten to that day
When our Redeemer shall come down,
And shadows pass away.

4 Not one, but all our days below,
Let us in hymns employ;
And in our Lord rejoicing go
To his eternal joy.

Meaning & Inspiration

The hymn gathers believers in united praise on the day associated with Christ's resurrection. Its opening image of hymns sung around the throne joins present worship to the hope of everlasting rest. The description of a day made and blessed by the Lord clearly echoes Psalm 118:24. The seven-day reference also presents the day as a sign of the rest promised to God's people.

The later verses look beyond a single day to the completion of Christian hope. The Redeemer's return will bring shadows to an end, while each day of earthly life is given to praise. That progression gives the hymn a clear movement: from communal song, through anticipation of heavenly rest, to a life marked by rejoicing in the Lord. Praise therefore becomes both a Sunday observance and a daily practice.
