Lyrics

Verse 1

Ain’t it a scary thing
When somebody’s time here ends
Layin’ flowers on their grave
Wonderin’ where their soul went
I tried and I tried he was startin’ to listen
I brought him to church he was feeling conviction
But you took him away before I could convince him
So I’m here on my knees sayin’

Chorus

Hey God
I know you know what I’m about to pray God
I just had to suck it up and say goodbye to my best friend
And I don’t ever wanna never see him again
And I know the only way to get in is through you
And he wasn’t quite the Christian he was supposed to be
And Lord it ain’t my place
But could you let him in anyway

Verse 2

I can’t imagine the day
On my heart’s last beat
When I walk through those gates
And he ain’t waitin’ on me
All I needed was a little more time I swear
I was so dang close it ain’t fair

Chorus

So hey God
I know you know what I’m about to pray God
I just had to suck it up and say goodbye to my best friend
And I don’t ever wanna never see him again
And I know the only way to get in is through you
And he wasn’t quite the Christian he was supposed to be
And Lord it ain’t my place
But could you let him in anyway

Bridge

‘Cause he was gonna let you in any day
And I’m just askin’ for a miracle
I know you don’t owe me anything

Chorus

But hey God
I know you know what I’m about to pray God
I just had to suck it up and say goodbye to my best friend
And I don’t ever wanna never see him again
And I know the only way to get in is through you
And he wasn’t quite the Christian he was supposed to be
And Lord it ain’t my place
Could you let him in anyway
Could you let him in anyway

Meaning & Inspiration

“Let Him in Anyway” by Blake Shelton is a country prayer written from grief. The opening verse pictures flowers on a grave and wonders where a soul went, then remembers trying to bring a friend to church and seeing conviction before death came. Now the singer kneels and says “Hey God,” asking whether the friend can be let in even though he “wasn’t quite the Christian he was supposed to be.”

The song is candid about its limits. The singer acknowledges that “the only way to get in is through you” and that it is not for him to decide, but asks anyway, “Lord it ain’t my place, but could you let him in anyway.” The bridge adds the hope that the friend was about to let God in any day, and calls the request a miracle that God does not owe.

The themes touch John 14:6 and Romans 10:9 on the way to salvation, Ephesians 2:8-9 on grace, and Psalm 34:18 on God’s nearness to the brokenhearted. The song is an honest prayer that leaves the outcome to God.
