About Richard Smallwood
Richard Lee Smallwood (1948–2025) was an American gospel songwriter, composer, arranger, singer, and pianist. He graduated cum laude from Howard University with degrees in classical vocal performance and piano, and he was a founding member of the Howard University Gospel Choir. Smallwood formed the Richard Smallwood Singers in 1977. Later in life, he earned a Master of Divinity from Howard University in 2004 and was ordained as a minister at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., where he served as artist-in-residence.
Smallwood released several albums, beginning with The Richard Smallwood Singers (1982), followed by Psalms (1984), Textures (1987), Adoration: Live in Atlanta (1996), and Anthology Live (2015). His catalog includes enduring songs such as “Total Praise,” “Center of My Joy,” and “I Love the Lord.”
Over his career, Smallwood was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2006 and received seven Stellar Gospel Music Awards. He won three Dove Awards and a Grammy Award for his production on Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration. In 2019, his autobiography, Total Praise: The Autobiography of Richard Smallwood, was released. He received the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.
