About Larnelle Harris
Larnelle Steward Harris is a gospel singer and songwriter whose career has spanned decades. He was born on July 11, 1947, in Danville, Kentucky, and graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1969 with a degree in music education. Harris began his professional music career touring as a drummer with the gospel group The Spurrlows.
He gained wide recognition as a member of the Gaither Vocal Band from 1984 to 1987. During this period and throughout his solo career, he became known for a series of celebrated songs. Among them are the duets with Sandi Patty, “More Than Wonderful” and “I’ve Just Seen Jesus,” as well as “How Excellent Is Thy Name,” “Amen,” “Mighty Spirit,” “I Miss My Time With You,” “The Father Hath Provided,” and “Touch Me Lord.”
Harris was the first Christian artist to perform inside the Kremlin after the fall of the Soviet Union. He serves as a deacon at his local church in Louisville, Kentucky. His contributions to gospel music have earned him five Grammy Awards and eleven GMA Dove Awards. He is a member of both the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame. In addition, he has received the Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts (Kentucky) and the Ad Council’s Silver Bell Award for Distinguished Public Service.
