About Kutless
Kutless is an American Christian rock band formed in 1999 in Portland, Oregon. The band’s roots trace back to Athey Creek Church, where the members began playing music together. The name “Kutless” is derived from Romans 6:23, with the band explaining, “He took the cuts for us… making us Kutless.” Founding members Jon Micah Sumrall and James Mead anchored the group through numerous lineup changes over the years.
The band released its self-titled debut album in 2002, establishing a presence in the Christian rock scene. Over time, their sound shifted from nu-metal and melodic hard rock to worship-inspired pop-rock, reflecting an evolving ministry focus. Albums such as Sea of Faces (2004), Strong Tower (2005), and To Know That You’re Alive (2008) marked key milestones in this transition. Later releases include the worship album It Is Well (2009), the single “Words of Fire” (2022), and the album The Seventh Seal (2025).
Kutless has sold over three million records worldwide and earned two RIAA certified Gold Records. Their song “What Faith Can Do” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Songs chart, and the album To Know That You’re Alive reached No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Albums chart. The band has also received nominations for Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, further affirming their place in Christian music.
