About Gungor
Gungor is a musical collective centered on the husband-and-wife duo Michael and Lisa Gungor. Michael Gungor was born on September 14, 1980, in Wisconsin. The group was originally known as The Michael Gungor Band. Before forming the collective, Michael and Lisa served as worship leaders at Resurrection Life Church in Grandville, Michigan.
The band has released several studio albums over the years, beginning with Bigger Than My Imagination in 2003, followed by Ancient Skies (2008) and Beautiful Things (2010). Their catalog also includes Ghosts Upon the Earth (2011), A Creation Liturgy (2012), I Am Mountain (2013), and One Wild Life: Soul (2015). Their music has been compared to artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, and Arcade Fire. The group has performed at various Christian conferences, including the Passion Conference.
Gungor earned early recognition within the Christian music industry. The song “Say So” won a GMA Dove Award for Contemporary Gospel Recorded Song of the Year in 2008. The album Beautiful Things received Grammy nominations for Best Gospel Song and Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album in 2011. The following year, Ghosts Upon the Earth was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. In 2013, A Creation Liturgy (Live) won an Independent Music Award for Best Live Performance Album.
Michael Gungor is also a co-founder of the art collective and podcast The Liturgists. Over time, Gungor’s work has moved from its worship-leading roots into a more experimental, genre-blurring approach to faith and creativity.
