Newsboys - We Believe Lyrics

Lyrics

In this time of desperation

When all we know is doubt and fear

There is only One Foundation

We believe, We believe

We believe in God the Father

We believe in Jesus Christ

We believe in the Holy Spirit

And He's given us new life

We believe in the crucifixion

We believe that He conquered death

We believe in the resurrection

And He's comin' back again

We believe

So, let our faith be more than anthems

Greater than the songs we sing

And in our weakness and temptations

We believe, We believe!

We believe in God the Father!

We believe in Jesus Christ!

We believe in the Holy Spirit!

And He's given us new life!

We believe in the crucifixion!

We believe that He conquered death!

We believe in the resurrection!

And He's comin' back again!

Let the lost be found and the dead be raised!

In the here and now, let love invade!

Let the church live love our God will see

We believe, We believe!

And the gates of hell will not prevail!

For the power of God, has torn the vail!

Now we know Your love will never fail!

We believe, We believe!

We believe in God the Father

We believe in Jesus Christ

We believe in the Holy Spirit

And He's given us new life!

We believe in the crucifixion!

We believe that He conquered death!

We believe in the resurrection!

And He's comin' back

He's comin' back again!

We believe in the crucifixion!

We believe that He conquered death!

We believe in the resurrection!

And He's comin' back

He's comin' back again!

We believe!

We believe!

Meaning & Inspiration

Standing in the back of the room during a rehearsal, watching a band run through this track by the Newsboys, I’m often struck by how rare it is to find a song that actually functions like a creed. Most songs we lean on are about our internal states—how we feel, how much we need, or how hard we are trying to trust. But this song strips the "I" out of the equation for a few minutes. It moves the focus from the human condition to the objective reality of the Trinity and the historical work of the Messiah.

There’s a line near the middle that catches me every time: "So, let our faith be more than anthems / Greater than the songs we sing." It’s a dangerous prayer to sing in a room full of people. When we belt out a chorus, it’s easy to mistake the volume of the crowd for the strength of our actual devotion. By singing that, we’re essentially asking to be disrupted. We’re asking that our Monday morning, with all its mundane frustrations and moral failures, looks something like the conviction we project on Sunday. It’s the difference between declaring "We believe" because the rhythm section is driving the room, and declaring it because the truth of the resurrection is the only thing keeping us tethered to hope.

From a structural standpoint, this is a utilitarian piece. It’s built for the gathered church. The melody is predictable—it doesn't ask the congregation to be musicians; it just asks them to be participants. That’s a gift. It removes the barrier of "performance" so people can actually articulate something heavy and substantial. You aren't distracted by complex phrasing; you’re forced to confront the nouns. God the Father. Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit. The crucifixion.

The landing is what keeps me thinking long after the last chord fades. When they sing about the veil being torn, they are pointing us directly to the book of Hebrews—to the idea that the barrier between God and man has been dismantled. But what are we left holding?

I sometimes worry that we stop at the high notes. We enjoy the adrenaline of the "We believe!" declaration, but we miss the weight of what that belief demands. If the veil is torn, we are exposed to a holy God, and that should be both terrifying and comforting. If He is coming back, as the song repeats with insistence, then our immediate worries about tomorrow are essentially temporary distractions.

There is a tension here that doesn't quite resolve. We sing about being "more than anthems," yet we are singing an anthem. We sing about the power of God, yet we leave the building and often live as if we are powerless. Maybe that’s the point. Perhaps we keep repeating these truths because we are forgetful creatures who need to be told, over and over, that the ground beneath us is firm. We need the reminder because we keep trying to build our own foundations out of shifting sand.
