I keep circling back to this passage, like Jacob at the river—I’m not leaving without understanding something.
Everyone hears the "burn it away" part and thinks about some abstract purification. They miss the mechanical demand of the thing. You’re asking for an amputation of your own soul parts. That’s a violent image to repeat six times in a row. It’s like watching a guy try to scrub his own skin off with a wire brush because he thinks he’s dirty. Why is the fire supposed to be so fast? You’re inviting something to strip your ribs bare. Seems like a dangerous way to ask for a favor.
Asking for a total fire inside yourself is just a polite way to wish for your own destruction.
