TobyMac - Cornerstone Lyrics

Lyrics

Intro: Zach Williams & TobyMac
Ahem
You ready, man?
Okay, yeah

Verse 1: TobyMac
Lookin' out my window, feelin' the crescendo
Sunset on a quiet sea
Sittin' with the ones that I'll forever love
We're waitin' on a flash of green

Pre-Chorus: TobyMac
And even when the nights got cold (Got cold)
You have always held me close (Me close)
You're the only Rock that I could ever stand on
You're the only one for me

Chorus: TobyMac
The sun goes up, the sun comes down
This old world keeps spinnin' 'round (Spinnin' 'round)
I'm here travelin' down this long and winding road (Long and winding road)
Seasons come and seasons go
They take me high, then leave me low
But I'm still standin' on the only Rock I know

Post-Chorus: TobyMac & Zach Williams, TobyMac
You're my cornerstone
Oh-oh-oh
No matter where I go
My cornerstone ('Stone)

Verse 2: TobyMac
Bible by my bedside, sweatin' through a long night
Wrestlin' the hounds of shame
Tryna turn the hands back on a troublin' past
Every move I make's in vain (Vain)

Pre-Chorus: TobyMac
But even in the shiftin' winds
You are Who You've always been
You're the only Rock that I could ever stand on
Through it all, You remain

Chorus: TobyMac
The sun goes up, the sun comes down
This old world keeps spinnin' 'round (Spinnin' 'round)
I'm here travelin' down this long and winding road (This winding road)
Seasons come and seasons go
They take me high, then leave me low
But I'm still standin' on the only Rock I know

Post-Chorus: TobyMac & Zach Williams, TobyMac, Bryan Fowler & Micah Kuiper, TobyMac
You're my cornerstone
Oh-oh-oh
No matter where I go
My cornerstone
Oh-oh-oh
No matter where I go (Mr. Zach Williams)

Bridge: Zach Williams
On Christ, the Solid Rock, I'm standin'
All other ground is sinking sand
On Christ, the Solid Rock, I'm standin' (I'm standin')
All other ground is sinking sand (Sinking sand)
On Christ, the Solid Rock, I'm standin'
Yes, Lord

Break: TobyMac
You're the only One that I will build my life on
Through it all, You remain

Chorus: TobyMac & Zach Williams, Zach Williams
The sun goes up, the sun comes down
This old world keeps spinnin' around
And I'm here travelin' down this long and winding road
Seasons come and seasons go
I been high, and I been low
But I'm standin' on the only Rock I know

Post-Chorus: TobyMac, Zach Williams, TobyMac & Zach Williams, Bryan Fowler & Micah Kuiper
You're my cornerstone (Oh-oh-oh, on Christ, I'm standin')

No matter where I go

Outro: Zach Williams, TobyMac, Bryan Fowler & Micah Kuiper
The sun goes up and the sun comes down (Oh-oh-oh, on Christ, I'm standin')
And I build my life on this solid ground (Oh-oh-oh, all other ground is sinking sand)
Oh, yeah
You are the only Rock I stand on

Meaning & Inspiration

"Wrestlin' the hounds of shame."

That’s the line that catches in my throat. It’s buried in the second verse of TobyMac’s Cornerstone, sandwiched between the domestic quiet of a Bible by a bedside and the futility of trying to rewrite history.

We often talk about shame as a weight, or a shadow, or a voice. But "hounds"? That’s different. Hounds are persistent. They are bred to track, to hunt, to exhaust their quarry. If you’ve ever had a night where your failures seem to be baying at the door—where the things you’ve done or left undone are circling the perimeter of your mind—you know that feeling isn’t just sadness. It’s predatory.

There is a strange tension here. In poetry, the "hound" can be a metaphor for the divine pursuer, like in Francis Thompson’s The Hound of Heaven, where the pursuit is an act of relentless, salvific love. But here, TobyMac flips the perspective. These are hounds of shame. He’s not being chased by mercy; he’s being hunted by his own past. He’s "sweatin' through a long night," trying to outrun or outsmart an enemy that knows his scent perfectly.

Is it a cliché to say that faith is the answer to this? Maybe. But the song doesn't pretend it’s easy. It’s honest about the fact that he's still "wrestlin'." He doesn't say he beat the dogs; he says he’s in the ring with them while the clock is ticking.

The spiritual reality, of course, hinges on 1 Peter 2:6: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”

That’s the pivot. If the "hounds of shame" are real, then the "Cornerstone" must be equally solid. You cannot build your life on shifting sand if you are being hunted by something that thrives on your instability. If your identity is tied to your performance—to the "long and winding road" mentioned in the chorus—you are essentially building a house in the middle of a pack’s territory. You’ll be eaten alive by your own regrets.

But there is a gritty comfort in the way this song places the "Bible by the bedside" right next to the "wrestling." It doesn't promise that the hounds will stop barking tonight. It just asserts that there is a foundation beneath the floorboards that no amount of shame can move.

Sometimes, faith isn't a feeling of victory. Sometimes, it’s just the act of standing on that one specific Stone while the hounds are still circling, knowing that if the ground you're standing on is truly solid, they can pace all they want—they can't pull the foundation out from under your feet. It’s a messy, unsettled place to be, but it’s a place where you finally stop running.
