Lyrics
Verse 1
If I go where the wind blows
Through the noise, there's an echo
I hear You calling me
To go beyond the deep
Verse 2
You'd seem further than I think
But not too far out of Your reach
I hear You telling me
Just keep my feet above the sea
Chorus
How'll I get through this storm?
If I keep my eyes on You
Yes the wind is blowing, waves are crashing
But I trust You
You will see me through
And I'll be standing
On the waves out the boat
To see Your face, stepping out
I'll keep the pace
'Cause I hear You calling out my name
And I won't fall if I keep the pace
Verse 3
And when I'm sinking
You're reaching for me
You rescued me from drowning
Where I drifted, You found me
Thanking You for saving me
And calming the waves in me
Chorus
Yes, I'll get through this storm
Yes, I'll keep my eyes on You
Yes the wind is blowing, waves are crashing
But I trust You
You will see me through
And I'll be standing
On the waves out the boat
To see Your face, stepping out
I'll keep the pace
'Cause I hear You calling out my name
And I won't fall if I keep the pace
And when I'm sinking
You're reaching for me
Bridge
What's around me won't take me under
You'll keep catching me over and over
What's around me won't take me under
You'll keep catching me over and over
Chorus
And now I'm standing
On the waves out the boat
To see Your face, stepping out
I'll keep the pace
'Cause I hear You calling out my name
And I won't fall if I keep the pace
And when I'm sinking
You're reaching for me
Bridge
I've found someone to lean on
I've found someone to lean on
I've found someone to lean on
He's a firm foundation
I've found someone to lean on
He's a firm foundation
Outro
I'm not walking on the water
I'm walking on Your word
I'm not walking on the water
I'm walking on Your word
I've found someone to lean on
(He's a firm foundation)
Now I'm resting from the waves
Out the boat, under grace
In Your arms, my safe embrace

Meaning & Inspiration
Waves uses the Gospel image of stepping onto stormy water to describe trust under pressure. The singer hears Christ’s call beyond the noise, leaves the boat, and fixes attention on him while wind and waves continue. That setting does not deny fear or weakness: sinking is openly acknowledged, along with the saving hand that reaches down. The movement from uncertainty to standing rests on Christ’s presence rather than personal control of the storm.
Matthew 14:28-31 is the clearest biblical background, especially Peter’s step from the boat, his sinking, and Jesus immediately taking hold of him. The lyric also recalls Christ calming the sea in Mark 4:39, while its closing confession of a firm foundation aligns with 1 Corinthians 3:11, which names Jesus Christ as the foundation already laid. The final contrast between walking on water and walking on God’s word sharpens the song’s message: security comes from trusting the one who calls and catches. Grace, rescue, and rest therefore answer the instability represented by the waves.
