Meaning & Inspiration

Listening to the song, I keep thinking about that idea in Revelation where people from every tribe, language, and nation are gathered before the throne. It’s hard not to feel that pull when hearing the listing of all these different people—Somalis, Congolese, Kenyans, and so many others. It’s like the song is trying to claim the whole continent for Jesus, which feels right when you consider the Psalms saying that all the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord. There’s something raw about it, the way it insists that our specific, localized cultures—our dances, our instruments like the Nyatiti—belong in the space of worship.

But then I stop and wonder if it’s too easy to just list names and call it praise. Is it really worship if we’re just celebrating ourselves in the process? The Bible is pretty clear that God is jealous for his glory alone, and sometimes when we bring in our own tribal pride, it gets messy. I’m trying to see if the lyrics actually point to the cross or if they’re just using God’s name as a way to unify a continent. When I hear them chanting about the different tribes, I want it to be because those people have actually bowed to Jesus as Savior, not just because it’s a catchy way to include everyone. Is the praise coming from a place of repentance, or is it just nationalistic excitement? I suppose the truth is that God doesn't need our cultures to be complete, but he delights in using them, and yet, I keep coming back to whether the focus stays on his holiness or if it starts to feel a little too human-centered by the end. It’s a strange feeling, being caught between the joy of seeing God praised globally and the nagging worry that we’re forgetting he’s also a consuming fire.
