Meaning & Inspiration

I have spent enough mornings staring at the sunrise through trembling fingers to know that most words we cast into the air are just vapor. We want our prayers to be sturdy—brick and mortar—but often they are just whispers against a gale. When I listen to Nathaniel Bassey repeat these names—Yeshua Hamashiach, Lion of Judah, Agunechemba—it doesn’t feel like he’s trying to construct a theology. It feels like he’s trying to hold onto a ledge.

I keep coming back to "Agunechemba." The way it sits in the throat, it carries a weight that the English language often lacks. It speaks of a protector, a guardian who stands at the gate. When you are young, you talk about the Lion of Judah as if it’s a promise of victory in a fight. You see the sword drawn. But when the joints ache and the house grows quiet, you don't need a conqueror who brings you to the next battle. You need the One who stays when the adrenaline has long since drained away.

I’ve walked through fires that left me scarred, and there were nights when I didn’t have the breath for a full sentence. That’s when the repetition starts to make sense. It’s not about finding new things to say to God. It’s about holding onto one name until your knuckles turn white. It’s like the way you hold a worn-out hymn book—the pages are soft and thin from decades of friction. You don’t need to read the whole page anymore; you just need to feel the ink under your thumb.

There is a strange tension in this music. On one hand, there is a call to shout, to make noise, to fill the room. But beneath that, there is a singular, focused stillness. It reminds me of Revelation 5:5, where John is told to stop weeping because the Lion of the tribe of Judah has triumphed. I used to think that meant the triumph was for me, for my comfort. Now, I wonder if the triumph is simply that He remains.

Does it hold up when the lights go out? When the house is dark and the only thing left is the sound of the clock ticking? Most of the songs I sang in my thirties would have collapsed under the weight of a long, lonely night. But there is something about stripping it all down to a name—not a request, not a complaint, just a name—that feels like it might actually survive the cooling of the earth.

I don’t know if Bassey knows what it is to be at the end of his own strength, but he’s hitting on something ancient. It’s the kind of sound that doesn't need to be understood to be felt. It just needs to be leaned against. And on the nights when the floor feels like it’s falling out from under me, "Agunechemba" is enough of a floor. It’s not a complete answer, but then again, in this life, I’ve found that the best truths are the ones that leave you with a little bit of mystery to hold onto until the morning comes.
