Meaning & Inspiration
“Jehovah Nissi” by Nathaniel Bassey is a worship song of victory. The opening verse calls God the first and the last, Alpha and Omega, who owns the world and made all things seen and unseen, recalling Revelation 22:13. The singer says that when bound, God came and rescued, gave light, and took away the darkness.
The chorus names Him Jehovah Nissi, “my banner,” the name Moses gave to an altar in Exodus 17:15, and says He surrounds the singer with victories, goes before, and fights the battles. The second verse says He is the same yesterday, today, and forever, a hiding place in trouble, which echoes Hebrews 13:8. It also points to the cross, where He bruised the serpent’s head, took the keys, and opened the prison doors, close to Genesis 3:15 and Revelation 1:18.
The bridge repeats that God has gone up with a shout and a trumpet sound, close to Psalm 47:5. The message is that Christ’s triumph is the believer’s banner.
