Martha Reed - Happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! Lyrics
Lyrics
O happy day, that fixed my choice On Thee, my Savior and my God! Well may this glowing heart rejoice, And tell its raptures all abroad.
Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray, And live rejoicing every day: Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away!
O happy bond, that seals my vows To Him Who merits all my love! Let cheerful anthems fill His house, While to that sacred shrine I move.
Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray, And live rejoicing every day: Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away!
It’s done: the great transaction’s done! I am the Lord’s and He is mine; He drew me and I followed on; Charmed to confess the voice divine.
Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray, And live rejoicing every day: Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away!
Now rest, my long-divided heart, Fixed on this blissful center, rest; Here have I found a nobler part; Here heav’nly pleasures fill my breast.
Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray, And live rejoicing every day: Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away!
High heav’n, that heard the solemn vow, That vow renewed shall daily hear, Till in life’s latest hour I bow And bless in death a bond so dear.
Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray, And live rejoicing every day: Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away!

O Happy Day, That Fixed My Choice - Martha Reed Garvin
Meaning & Inspiration
I’ve been thinking about that line, "I am the Lord’s and He is mine," and it feels so heavy, in a good way. It brings to mind how the Song of Solomon talks about belonging to each other, but here it’s about a transaction, like the song says. Calling it a transaction is kind of strange when you think about it—like a business deal, I guess—but then I look at how Scripture talks about being bought with a price. It feels like the song is trying to get at that moment where the weight of sin just drops because someone else paid for it. When it says Jesus washed my sins away, I keep going back to Titus where it talks about the washing of regeneration. It’s a clean break, isn't it?
The part about fixing my choice, though, makes me stop for a second. Is it really my choice? I mean, the lyrics mention He drew me and I followed, which feels more like John 6 where no one can come unless the Father draws them. It’s like the song knows it’s a partnership, but then it leans into how much power He has in the beginning of it all. It’s honest, maybe a bit too bold in places, especially talking about my own vows being sealed. I wonder if I can really hold up my end of the bargain like the song claims I will, especially when it talks about vows being renewed daily. Some days I don't feel like I'm doing much of anything, let alone keeping a sacred bond. Yet, there’s something about the persistence of it—that steady, daily watching and praying—that feels like it fits with staying awake in the garden. I’m just not sure if I’m as consistent as the lyrics make it sound, or if the whole thing hinges more on His side of the transaction than mine.
