Christmas Lights contrasts the pressures of the holiday with the good news of Christ’s coming. Decorations and gifts are placed in perspective, while “Goory to God” and “Peace on earth” point back to the announcement of Jesus’ birth. The image of Christmas lights then becomes a sign of home, hope and guidance amid darkness.
The chorus addresses heavy burdens, but its assurance rests in “God’s own Son the King” and the promise of lighter loads. That language may recall Jesus’ invitation to the weary in Matthew 11. In the bridge, the repeated announcement that the King has come expands into joy for a broken world and His everlasting reign.
