Kari Jobe - The Dove Lyrics

Lyrics

1 Verse:
God was there at the beginning
His Spirit brooding like a Dove
Spoke the earth into 'existence
Formed 'creation that He 'loved
Man was born of perfect image
Made 'to be a friend of God
Meant to dwell within His presence
Yeah, it's where we all belong

Chorus:
Holy Spirit
All we need is more of You
We want more of You
Holy Spirit
All we need is more of You
We want more of You

2 Verse:
When sin had spoiled creation
The creator sent a flood
On the cusp of new beginning
He again released the Dove
And after all the searching
It found a place to land
On Christ the perfect Son
Who would redeem it all again
Looking for the branches
It landed on the vine
The one for our redemption
Who would bridge eternal life

Chorus 2:
Holy Spirit, the truth, the living water
All we need is more of You
We want more of You
Holy Spirit, the Helper and the Healer
All we need is more of You
We want more of You

Bridge:
Let this be an upper room
Light the flame, we burn for You
Holy, holy, holy Spirit
Like a mighty rushing wind
Pour Your Spirit out again
Holy, holy, holy Spirit

3 Verse:
It is not by my own earning
To have the Helper at my side
The gift was fully purchased
When the Lamb was crucified
So now freely I can ask Him
For His blood has washed me clean
Let the Dove of Heaven rest upon
The Christ in me

The Christ in me

Meaning & Inspiration

I’ve been stuck on that line about the dove finding a place to land on Christ. It’s such a strong image, honestly. It pulls you right back to the baptism in the gospels, where the Spirit descends like a dove, and you realize the song is tracing that movement from the waters of Genesis to the Jordan. There’s something heavy about the idea that the dove was searching for a place to settle after the flood, and then finding its true home on the Son. It makes you think about how restless we can be, searching for a place to land, when really, the Spirit’s rest is solely on the One who finished the work.

It’s interesting, too, how it shifts into that plea for more of the Spirit. Sometimes I wonder if we talk about wanting "more" in a way that forgets we already have the Helper living inside us, like the lyrics say at the end. If the gift was already purchased on the cross, why am I always asking like it’s something I have to earn or pull down from somewhere else? But then, the bridge calls back to the upper room, that place where the disciples were waiting and surrendered, and I guess that’s the tension. We have the Spirit, yet we’re constantly needing to be reminded to let Him have the room in our own lives, you know? It feels like it’s trying to hold onto the truth that we are clean because of the Lamb, while still acknowledging that we need that presence to actually burn in us. It’s weird how I can agree with the theology of it—that it’s not by my own earning—and still feel like I’m constantly acting like I have to do the work myself. Does asking for the Spirit to come and rest on me mean I’m forgetting that He’s already there?
