“Forever” by Jason Nelson is written as God’s own promise to the listener. The opening line, “forever is a long time, but God loves you that long,” sets the pattern, and the verses are spoken in God’s voice: “I’ll never leave you,” “nothing in this world could make me walk away,” and “I’ll be by your side no matter what you face.” The chorus repeats that He will love “that long.”
The later sections make the promise concrete. The singer says God stays close “when you’re crying,” “in the midst of your pain,” and even “when you sin,” while another section speaks of being committed “for the rest of your life.” The closing run of “forever and ever and ever” stretches the promise to its limit.
This language is close to Hebrews 13:5, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee,” and to Romans 8:38-39 on nothing separating believers from God’s love. Jeremiah 31:3 speaks of an everlasting love. The song is reassurance spoken directly to the listener.
