About Jason Nelson
Jason Nelson is an American urban contemporary gospel artist, worship leader, and pastor. He was born Jason Albert Nelson on November 10, 1974, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Bishop James D. Nelson Sr. and Sister Bessie. He is the twin brother of gospel artist Jonathan Nelson. Nelson serves as the pastor of The Tabernacle at Greater Bethlehem Temple in Maryland. He is married to Tonya Nelson, and the couple has two children.
Nelson began his music career with the 2005 release of his debut solo project, I Shall Live. He went on to release a series of albums, including Place of Worship (2008), Shifting the Atmosphere (2012), and Jesus Revealed (2015). His work is rooted in the urban contemporary gospel and praise and worship genres. Over the course of his career, five of his songs have reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart, including “Nothing Without You,” “Residue,” and “Yahweh,” which features Melvin Crispell III.
His contributions to gospel music have been recognized with multiple Stellar Awards. In 2013, he won the Stellar Award for Praise and Worship CD of the Year. In 2025, he received the Stellar Award for Contemporary Album of the Year for his project You Belong: Live in Durham, released that same year.
