Meaning & Inspiration
“Trust in the Lord” by Don Moen sets Proverbs 3:5-6 to music. The chorus quotes the passage almost word for word: trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, acknowledge Him in all your ways, and He shall direct your path.
The verse adds lines from the psalms. Choir responses of “ooooh” sit between the promises that He will not allow your foot to be moved and that He who keeps you will not slumber. The Lord is near to all who call on Him in truth. The ending has tenors and a round singing “Goodness and mercy shall follow me,” which echoes Psalm 23:6.
The themes are close to Proverbs 3:5-6, Psalm 121:3-4 and Psalm 145:18. The song is a plain setting of Scripture and works as a short prayer of trust that a congregation can learn quickly.
