Meaning & Inspiration

“Arise” by Don Moen is a short worship song built around one request and one response. The opening verse names the desire of the gathered church, “One thing we ask of You… that as we worship You, Lord, come and change our lives,” and then repeats the single word “Arise.” The wording echoes Psalm 27:4, where the psalmist speaks of one thing he asked of the Lord, though here the request is for God’s presence to come among worshipers and change them.

The chorus makes the picture of a throne explicit: “Arise, take Your place, be enthroned on our praise… Arise, King of kings, Holy God, as we sing.” This recalls Psalm 22:3, which speaks of God enthroned on the praises of Israel, and Psalm 132:8, a prayer asking the Lord to arise to His resting place.

The bridge, “We lift You up on our praises,” closes the song as an act of exaltation. Its message is simple: worship is offered so that God’s presence takes its place among His people, and lives are changed there.
