About Stryper
Stryper is a Christian heavy metal band formed in 1983 in La Mirada, California, originally under the name Roxx Regime. The band’s name is derived from the Bible verse Isaiah 53:5. They are known for their “heavenly metal” style and for being the first overtly Christian heavy metal band to gain mainstream recognition. Current members include Michael Sweet (lead vocals, guitar), Robert Sweet (drums), Oz Fox (guitar), and Perry Richardson (bass).
The band achieved significant mainstream success in the 1980s, with MTV hits and Billboard Top 40 chart placements. Their 1986 album To Hell with the Devil was the first Christian metal album to achieve platinum sales status. Stryper also became the first band to have two songs in MTV’s Top 10 simultaneously—“Free” and “Honestly.” Additional hits from that era include “Calling on You” and “Always There for You.” The group received multiple GMA Dove Award wins and a Grammy nomination.
After disbanding in 1993, Stryper reunited in 2003 and have continued recording. They have sold over 10 million albums worldwide. In 2024, the band released the album When We Were Kings.
