About Sixpence None the Richer
Sixpence None the Richer is a Christian alternative rock band formed in the early 1990s in New Braunfels, Texas, after guitarist Matt Slocum met vocalist Leigh Nash at a church retreat. The band’s name was inspired by a passage in C.S. Lewis’s book Mere Christianity. Original members also included Dale Baker and Justin Cary. The group blended alternative rock and pop, with lyrics often reflecting spiritual themes.
They released their debut album, The Fatherless and the Widow, in 1993, followed by This Beautiful Mess in 1995, which won a Gospel Music Association Dove Award for Alternative/Modern Rock Album. Their self-titled 1997 album Sixpence None the Richer earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album. Mainstream success came with the 1998 single “Kiss Me,” which received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. In 2024, “Kiss Me” was certified RIAA Triple Platinum. The band also found radio success with their 1999 cover of “There She Goes.”
Over the years, Sixpence None the Richer experienced periods of activity and hiatus. A reunion took place in 2007, leading to the Christmas album The Dawn of Grace in 2008. The band reunited again in 2023 and released a new album, Rosemary Hill, in 2024. Throughout their career, the band’s spiritual foundation informed their work while their accessible pop sound attracted a broad audience.
