About Maranatha! Music
Maranatha! Music is a Christian music record label and nonprofit ministry founded in 1971 by Chuck Smith Sr. of Calvary Chapel. It was established to promote “Jesus Music” and to serve the church with the “song of faith.” The label’s first release was the 1971 compilation The Everlastin’ Living Jesus Music Concert, which helped introduce the sound of the Jesus People movement to a wider audience.
The Maranatha! Singers serve as the label’s in-house choir, and over the years the label has produced a range of genres, including worship, children’s music, Christmas recordings, and instrumental projects. In the 1980s, Maranatha! Music expanded its reach by creating sub-labels and series such as “Colours” for instrumental music and “Broken Records” for rock and punk releases.
Among the label’s most influential projects is its long-running Praise series, beginning with Praise 1: The Praise Album in 1974 and continuing through later volumes such as Praise 20: Who Is Like the Lord in 1999. The label also produced popular children’s music projects including The Kids Praise Album! and Psalty the Singing Songbook. Maranatha! Music is distributed by Capitol Christian Music Group.
The ministry’s impact has been recognized with two major honors: the National Religious Broadcasters’ President’s Award in 1990 and the Gospel Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991.
