Keith Green was a pianist, singer, and songwriter whose work became a defining voice in contemporary Christian music. He was born Keith Gordon Green on October 21, 1953, in Sheepshead Bay, New York, and began his music career as a child, signing with Decca Records at age twelve. After a period of searching for spiritual truth, Green converted to Christianity in the 1970s, and his faith reshaped both his life and his music.

Along with his wife, Melody, Green founded Last Days Ministries in Garden Valley, Texas. He became known for a radical approach to ministry that included giving away his albums for free or allowing people to pay whatever they could afford. His songs from this period include “Oh Lord, You’re Beautiful,” “Asleep in the Light,” “Your Love Broke Through,” “There Is a Redeemer,” “Grace by Which I Stand,” “So You Wanna Go Back to Egypt,” and “I Want to Be More Like Jesus.”

Green’s life and ministry were cut short when he died in a plane crash on July 28, 1982, in Garden Valley, Texas, at the age of twenty-eight. In 2001, he was posthumously inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. His recordings continue to be remembered for their direct, faith-driven message and his commitment to living out the convictions he sang about.
