About Jars of Clay
Jars of Clay is a Christian alternative rock band whose name is derived from the New International Version translation of 2 Corinthians 4:7. The group formed in the early 1990s while the members—Dan Haseltine, Charlie Lowell, Stephen Mason, and Matthew Odmark—were students at Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois. Their musical style incorporates elements of alternative rock, folk, acoustic, and pop.
The band’s 1995 self-titled debut album achieved crossover success in both Christian and mainstream markets, anchored by the hit single “Flood.” Other early songs in their catalog include “Liquid,” “Crazy Times,” “Five Candles (You Were There),” and “Heaven.” The debut album was certified double-platinum by the RIAA.
Jars of Clay went on to win three Grammy Awards in the “Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album” category, for Much Afraid (1997), If I Left the Zoo (1999), and The Eleventh Hour (2002). The album Much Afraid also earned platinum certification from the RIAA. Additional songs in their catalog include “Two Hands” and “Hero.”
In 2007, the band left Essential Records to establish their own independent label, Gray Matters. Active since 1993, Jars of Clay has remained a consistent presence in Christian music, balancing commercial reach with artistic independence.
