About Grits
GRITS is an American Christian hip-hop duo formed in Nashville in 1995. The group consists of members Stacey “Coffee” Jones and Teron “Bonafide” Carter, and the name GRITS stands for “Grammatical Revolution In the Spirit.” Both members originally worked as dancers for the Christian music group DC Talk before forming their own act.
The duo was one of the first acts signed to Gotee Records, the label founded by tobyMac. They released their debut album Mental Releases in 1995, followed by Factors of the Seven (1998), Grammatical Revolution (1999), and The Art of Translation (2002). The song “Ooh Ahh,” featuring tobyMac, became a significant hit and was certified Platinum by the RIAA.
GRITS continued releasing music through Gotee, including the companion albums Dichotomy A and Dichotomy B in 2004. Dichotomy B earned a Grammy Award nomination. Over the years, the group received multiple GMA Dove Awards for songs including “Plagiarism,” “They All Fall Down,” “Believe,” and “Hittin’ Curves.” Their music also found placement in mainstream films such as The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and Big Momma’s House 2.
In 2007, the duo founded their own independent record label, Revolution Art. They later released the album Saints & Sinners in 2017.
